In a further departure from the historical portraiture of recent exhibitions, Melbourne artist, Tim Vagg has turned his eye to a more symbolic and contemporary take on the iconography of our national identity. In his new 'Postcards from the Holy Land'
Vagg takes us on an irreverent pilgrimage of some of the absurd monuments in our highway landscape.
'Postcards from the Holy Land' takes us on a gallery tour of Australia's iconic 'Big Things', elevating these tawdry advertising landmarks beyond art and into the realm of holy veneration. Invoking Latin American devotional folk art such as Retablos, Ex- Votos and Nichos, the paintings pay homage to these monuments of national bounty in a harsh land, yet they speak of a spiritual void in our national psyche that engenders blind devotion and mindless imitation.
